“An Opportunity Training Scheme for Brunei Youth”
An Intervention to Train and Employ the Unemployed Youth in Brunei
Background
ATDC, as its service to the community and to the government’s efforts to provide the youth with employable skills, developed this training programme. The unemployed youth deserve an opportunity to improve themselves and become worthwhile members of the community.
Fully aware of this, Hj Musa B Hj Adnin, MD of Adinin Group and its Chairman, Hj Adnin B Pehin Dato Hj Ibrahim, and Dr. Jess Ravalo, Manager of ATDC, developed this training scheme last year in consultation with the Labour Department, Ministry of Home Affairs.
It was launched last 17 August 2009, in cooperation with the Labour Department, Ministry of Home Affairs and HSBC.
The first batch of twelve youth participants was selected from a list of jobseekers provided by the Labour Department, Kuala Belait.
It is also supported by eight contractors in Kuala Belait whose companies provided a three-month attachment to the youth after their training.
The programme involved training on lifting and hoisting skills which were conducted in ATDC and followed by a three-month attachment in one of the contractor companies in Kuala Belait and Seria.
Retention and passing in the programme depended on the participants’ work attitudes, their ability to follow instructions, and safe working habits.
After completion of training and attachment experience, the plan was to have them employed by their attachment companies or recommended for another company or BSP contractor.
